We had an exciting day today. We visited with Uncle Jerry in Frankfurt. :)
After a remarkably productive morning for us, we set off to the Geilenkirchen train station to get our tickets. Christian LOVES trains, train tracks, train stations... anything train related. We had about an hour until our train departed, so we had some time to visit with Christian and Leona at the Bocadillo.
Christian learned the words "train track" on this trip - we looked at a lot of them. He enjoyed playing on the train from Geilenkirchen to Dusseldorf. After a snack, some reading and looking out the window he took a nap. He slept right through our connection to the next train, so I had to carry him. It was pretty cold, but he slept peacefully. The trip from Dusseldorf to Frankfurt went pretty well, with only one hiccup. I got on the train and sat down in the first available seat, because I didn't have a specific seat reservation. When the ticket agent came by to check our ticket he informed me that I was in first class and should be in second class. He wouldn't allow me to wait until Christian woke up to move. Lesson learned. I need to check my ticket a little more carefully. So, we walked back (me carrying a sleeping Christian and my backpack) to try to find a seat in second class. There were very few seats available. I walked all the way to the back of the train and back through a second time before I found an aisle seat that was open. He woke up shortly after I settled into our MUCH smaller second class seat. The gentlemen we sat next to was polite, but ended up excusing himself to find another seat. That worked out well for us. Christian had the seat by the window to play, read and eat. He liked to sit on the foot rest while exclaiming, "I poop" or "I pee" or "I potty". Hours of entertainment. :) Well, maybe not that long.
So, we finally arrived in Frankfurt around 2:30. That left us at least 1/2 hours until Jerry got there, but I had forgotten the exact time so we didn't chance leaving the airport/train station. Instead we bought a lovely sandwich from a particularly curt sales lady and had lunch. Then we spent the next couple of hours exploring the train station - watching the trains and buses, riding the escalators and elevators, climbing the stairs, just walking around, etc. Christian enjoyed it for the most part. Towards the end of the day he started to get a bit weary, but he was still really good.
Then the moment arrived - Jerry was finally here! Yeah!! So, we went to meet him at his check-in desk. Unfortunately they had a problem with their tickets that had to be worked out with his company's travel department, but fortunately (for us) his flight was delayed. That gave him plenty of time to work out his ticket issue and have dinner with us before our return train left. Christian was pretty shy with him at first. That's not really like him, but he was pretty tired at that point. During dinner though, he perked up and talked a bit and tackled Jerry in our booth. Jerry had pictures on his computer to show us of his family. They are a bit far for us to see often, so it was really nice to get to visit and see pictures! :) Neither of thought to bring our camera, so we have no proof of the rendevous, but we all really enjoyed it.
On our way home, Christian enjoyed watching for the train. On the ride from Frankfurt to Aachen he did more playing with his toys, reading, eating, and pretending to sit on a potty while sitting on the foot rest. Good entertainment for all. He was awake for our transfer, which was great for a quick diaper change. Then off to Geilenkirchen, where he promptly fell asleep. It was pretty uneventful from there. We arrived back in Geilenkirchen at around 9:30. Christian had had enough of trains for the day. :)
